Wellsboro Gazette (Newspaper) - June 26, 1991, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania June 26 Adventures of Dean Lamb Part II Dean Lamb sailed from Brazil in 1912. so ill from assorted tropi cal fevers that he could barely walk. He didn t care the in his pocket was going to make him an aviator By the time Lamb s ship docked in Brooklyn he was regaining his strength He hurried to Ham mondsport N Y where he began taking flying lessons from Glenn Curtiss After a short period of in Lamb made his first so lo flight on May During his he kept track of news from Mexico where the Revolu tion of 1910-1920 was gathering steam As a soldier of fortune Lamb was well aware that his newly acquired flying skills would add real luster to his He was impatient to put them to use As soon as he could land a plane without crashing Lamb headed for the southwest The town of Naco Ariz strad died the Mexican American bor der Lamb walked into a saloon on the Mexican side of the street and offered his services to General Benjamin a field command- er for the rebel leader Venus tiano Carranza General Hill jumped at the chance to hire an 'expert' flier He offered Lamb a day just to keep a plane in the air As Lamb put This war business was picking up General Hill then ordered an airplane Three weeks later a Curtiss Model D Pusher arrived complete with mechanic In the an enemy plane had unexpectedly appeared over wreaking havoc on rebel morale General Hill was very anxious for Lamb to go up and shoot the interloper down Lamb was not pleased He had been looking forward to an easy job making reconnaisance flights Now he was expected to actually fight he personally knew the enemy pilot PhilRader a former reporter for the San Francisco whom Lamb had metln 1910 With many misgivings he his plane up and went looking for Rader It wasn't long before they inter cepted each other The resulting duel was inconse quential After flying around and emptying their six-guns at each Lamb and Rader broke off the fight and called it quits They never fought again This trivial encounter would've been except that it is believed to be the world's first dogfight Lamb and themselves v footnote in history For a brief exhilarating Lamb was acclaimed a Hero of the Revolution The bloom quick- ly wore off The harsh climate and .Cherry Flats' own 'Soldier of Fortune'. terrain ruined Lamb s plane His paychecks dried up One day Lamb and his mechanic simply walked across the border and left the revolution behind They went to San Francisco where they bought another plane and eked out a living by making exhibition flights When the First World War be gan in Aug 1914 Lamb wasted lit tie time getting into it By Jan uary 1915 he was serving in the Royal Flying Corps forerun ner of the Royal Air Ser geant Lamb shot down a German bomber near London during the Gotha raids of 1917 Later that year Lamb himself was shot down and wounded The RFC in vahded him back to the States After he recovered Lamb worked as a flying instructor test pilot and aeronautical consult ant He held a brief commission as lieutenant of the Aerial Police in New York City When the U S Post Office started the air mail run between New York and Chi Dean Lamb was one of the first pilots they hired Poor equip ment and pneumonia forced him to quit A period of barnstorming followed Lamb loved but there was so much competition no one could make a living at it South America beckoned once more In August Lamb went to Honduras and joined the rebel forces of General Rafael Lopez Gutierrez After a hard fought battle for the town of San Pedro General Lopez marched into Tegucigalpa and seized the presidency Lamb collected a handsome paycheck for com- manding a machine gun company The following he was back in this time in Guate mala In a war which lasted only 11 the rebel General Her rera overthrew President Ca brera Lamb commanded a sec tion of Lewis guns and saw bloody street fighting in Guatemala City During these ground Lamb had strenuously argued that he was more valuable as a fli er The Honduran government fi nally decided to take him up on it They ordered a Bristol Fighter from England for Lamb's person al use and appointed him Com mander in Chief of the Air Forces of Honduras In fact Lamb and his plane were the Air Forces of Honduras On April Lamb warmed up his new plane and flew from San Pedro Sula to Te gucigalpa. PA 814-848-7575 Bolivar NY 716-593-3330 Sell because We However local bureaucrats be- came jealous of Lamb's popular- ity During a period of political instability they sabotaged Lamb's plane and conspired to have him assassinated Lamb heard about the plot and quietly slipped out of Honduras His glory days in Cen tral Amenta were over Lndaunted Lamb picked his way down the Pacific coast of South America He looked in vain for work in Lcuador Peru and Bo- livia By the time he got to Argen tma things were looking a revolution had begun in Para guay There the rebels and the government were both looking for someone to command their re- spective air forces Lamb took the government contract and an Italian named Mazzolmi took the rebel contract Lamb and 'Mazzy' happened to be friends They summoned all the foreign avia- tors in Buenos Aires and took turns choosing opposing teams The idea was to ensure a friendly opposition When the two air groups took up their duties in they had an under standing. Whenever two opposing planes met the pilot who hap pened to be over temtory would pretend to be shot down The fliers became adept at fakinga'kill By the time the war Lamb s team had racked up 48 victories even though tht rebels had only six planes Lamb scored seven victories and was himself shot down five times Their employers appdnnth never caught on True to form Lamb had spent all his earnings on riotous hung He had to stay on in Argentina for several months as a professional gambler By the time hi won enough money to buy a ticket out of the country war had broken out in the Brazilian state of Km Grande do Sul Lamb immediate ly took ship for Brazil The most dangerous adventure of his hit was about to begin be NOTICE L.G.
